Chapter 1  Body Language

 

I. Teaching Aims:

1. To practise telling the main idea of the text.

2. To understand some new words and expressions.

3. To familiarize translation between English and Chinese.

 

II. Teaching Methods:

1. Presentation

2. Q & A

 

III. Teaching Procedure:

Step 1:

 Play the tape. Ask students to listen to the tape and think about the main idea of the text.

Step 2:

Invite 2-3 students to tell the main idea ?? This is a short story about the impression our body language can make on people.

Step 3: Language Points

1.       look up: 向上看,抬头看

e.g. look up at the top of the tree

查看,查阅

e.g. I looked up new words in the dictionary.

③(生意等)看好,好转

e.g. Trade should look up later in the year.

   Things are looking up!

   look sb. up and down 上下打量某人

   look up to: respect 尊敬

   look down on / upon 轻视

 

2.       middle-aged  adj.

adj. + n-ed = adj.

e.g. white-haired, short-sighted, warm-hearted

 

3.       well-dressed  adj.

ad. + v (PP) = adj.

e.g. well-known, well-paid, nicely-decorated

 

4.       glance vi.: give a quick look

glance at / over / round

e.g. He glanced at his watch and then looked at the sky.

   The old man glanced over the newspaper.

   The teacher glanced round the classroom.

   glance  n.    take / have / give a glance at 浏览

                at first glance 乍一看

(cf.) glance at 一瞥,很快一看

stare at 凝视,注视(带有倾慕)

e.g. They all ~d ~ me with surprise.

glare at 怒目而视

e.g. The woman rose and ~d ~ the rude waiter.

 

5. hesitate  vi.

  hesitate about/ over: He is still hesitating over the choice between the two dresses.
  hesitate to do: I hesitate to ask you, but will you lend me some money?
  hesitate in : He hesitated in speaking.
  hesitation  n.

e.g. There is no room for hesitation, so you have to make an immediate decision.
  without hesitation
毫不犹豫

 

6. opposite
  adj. We are sitting on the opposite sides of the fire.
      They are walking in opposite directions.

       The building opposite to ours is a church.
  n.   You think he is naughty, but I think the opposite.
  prep. We live opposite the post office.

7. greet  vt.  打招呼,问候,迎接

  greet sb.

  greet n. with n.

  greet sb. by doing

e.g. She greeted her teacher politely.

His speech was greeted with cheers.

  greetings  n. 问候语

e.g. Send my best greetings to all your family.

   give one’s greetings to sb.

 

8. cheerfully: smile, whistle, work cheerfully
cheerful: happy, pleasant

e.g. a cheerful smile
 You are very cheerful today.
 cheerful colour, a cheerful room
cheer: give shouts of joy: The crowd cheered loudly as the Queen appeared.
                     The winning team were cheered by their supporters.
cheer up: Try and cheer up a bit; life isn’t that bad.
cheering: encouraging,: cheering news

 

9.       get down to sth./ doing sth.: begin to do sth.; give serious attention to sth.; tackle sth.       

e.g. Don’t you think it’s time we got down to business?
    Then let us get down to a practical discussion.
    You must get down to your studies this year.
    It’s time I got down to some serious work.

 

10.   sigh with: She sighed as she lay back on the bed.
        He sighed with pleasure after the excellent meal.
sigh for: sigh for home
        She sighed for her lost opportunity.
sign v. : Sign your name here, please.
       The painting isn’t sighed so we don’t know who it’s by.
sign for/ with : He sighed for Arsenal yesterday.

 

11.   take sth. over (from sb.) 接手、接替

e.g. Peter will take over as managing director when Bill retires.
    Would you like me to take over the driving for a while?

 

12.   senior: older in years or higher in ranks

e.g. His father used to be a senior officer in the Liberation War.
   Now he is studying in a senior high school.
   John is senior to me in experience and length of service.
   be senior to: He is two years senior to me. == He is senior to me by two years.
   junior: lower in rank or standing than sb.: a junior clerk in an office
   He is several years junior to Mrs. Cooper.

 

13.   employ: employ sb. on/ in/ as sth. :He’s employed on the oil rigs.
                            She’s employed as a driver.
employee
:雇员、受雇者
:The manager fired three employees.
employer
:雇主
: They’re not good employers, i.e. They treat their workers badly.
interviewee
:被采访者
:

:采访者:

 

14.   pick up
捡起,拾起:Please pick up all these pieces of paper.
            She picked up the little book and gave it to him.
无意地买到、顺便去买:
I picked up that old oak table in a Welsh village.
(非正式)学到:
He picked up French while he was staying in Paris.
              He picked up the knowledge of radio just by staying around the radio station.
接某人上车:
I’ll pick you up on the corner at three; don’t be late.
            Did you pick the washing up from the laundry?

 

15.   encouraging: inspiring

encourage sb. to do : Her success encourages me to try the same things.
                 The students are encouraged to give their opinions freely.
   encouragement: The teacher’s words were a great encouragement to him.
   discourage sb. from doing: I discouraged him from borrowing money from the strangers.
   sb. be discouraged == lost heart

16.   prefer…to…
prefer to do rather than do == would rather do than do : I prefer to work rather than sit idle.
prefer sth. to sth. : He said he preferred the farm life to city life.
prefer doing sth. to doing sth.

e.g. He preferred spending his spare time doing some serious reading.
   Even on holidays. He preferred doing something to doing nothing.

 

17.   It’s the way you communicate.
way:
方法、方式
:
       
跟不定式
: They had no way to communicate with Kurt.
                 To scare a bird is not the way to catch it.
       
of+动名词
: There was no way of explaining.
                     I don’t like Mr. Black’s way of talking.
       
跟从句
: I don’t like the way that you laugh at her.
               People liked the way he wrote and so he went on writing.

 

18.   communication: Radio and television are important means of communication.
communicate: convey or pass on sth.: He tries to communicate his ideas in his report.
communicate with sb.: Hs has no way to communicate with him.
communicate sth. to sb. : The radio station communicated the storm warning to the whole village.

 

19.   more than: over: My grandmother is more than eighty years old.

not only: Mr. Wang is more than a teacher, he is also our good friend.
                     He bookshop is more than a place of business. It is a place of relaxation.
             very: I am more than happy to take you there in my car.
                  They were more than glad to help you.

 

20.   expression: 表达、表示: She gave expression to her sadness.
                The school encourages free expression in art, drama and creative writing.
         
神情、表情
: ‘I don’t understand,’ he said, with an expression of complete surprise.
express sth. to sb. : The guests expressed their thanks before leaving.
                His actions express his love more than any words could do.
express oneself: Learning to express oneself well is an important part of education.
             He is still unable to express himself in English.
express n. :
快车、快递
: the 8:00 am express to Edinburgh
                     send goods by express

 

21.   appearance:  外貌:Don’t judge others by their appearances.
           
出现:
The sudden appearance of a policeman caused the thief to run away.
           
出场:
His first appearance on stage was at the age of three.
appear:
出现
:come into view: A ship appeared on the horizon.
      
公开露面
: I have to appear in court on a charge of drunken    driving.
      
似乎、好像
:seem:  She appears to have a lot of friends.
It appears:

: It appears as if she’s lost interest in her job.
disappear  v.

 

22.   impression

make a good impression on:
impress sb. with sth.: The girl impressed her fiancé’s family with her liveliness and sense of                       

humour.
                  We were most impressed with/ by your efficiency.
impress sth. on/ upon sb.: His words impressed themselves on my memory.
                    The manager impressed on his office staff the importance of keeping   

accurate records.
be impressed by/ with sth. : I was deeply impressed by what he had seen in China.

23.   improve: make or become better : Try to improve your English.
improve in:
……方面有改进、提高

improve on: ……加以改进、提高

Chapter 1  Eyes and Language

I. Pre-reading:

  Look at the pictures on P.19, learn sth. more about one kind of body language: gestures. Guess the meaning of picture 1 & 2, check the answers of the rest.

 

II. Listening  P.18

  Listen to the tape once, while listening, underline the words they don’t know.

 

III. Language Points:

1.       throughout  prep. 遍及,在期间

e.g. SARS spread throughout the country.

              ad. 到处,自始至终

e.g. The house has been repainted throughout.

 

2. mankind: the human race   U.

  man   U. 人类

  human beings / humans

 

3. far: very much

e.g. It is far better to go by plane.

  by far: His explanation is clearer by far.

4. contact  n.: communication

  make / lose contact with sb.

  be / keep in contact with sb.

          vt.: communicate with

 

5.       signal  v. 发信号,示意

signal + n.

       n. 信号

 

6.       maintain  vt.

维持,保持: The two classmates maintained their friendship for 40 years.

   供养:It is hard to maintain his family on his small income.

   保养,维修:He maintains his car very well.

 

7.       lack  vt. 缺乏

lack sth.: She lacks money to buy new shoes.

     n. (a) lack of

        for lack of: The project had to be given up for lack of funds.

   lacking  a.  be lacking in

 

8.       lead to 

导致:His misunderstanding led to a big mistake.

to (prep.): pay attention to, devote … to, look forward to

通往:All roads lead to Rome.

 

IV. Homework:

1.       Exercise A2 on P.16

The pattern of the letter should follow invitation B.
